Mr Wallington holds a BSc in Mining Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa and has participated in executive programmes with both the London Business School and Harvard Business School. Mr Wallington has 30 years experience in the coal exploration and mining industry. Prior to joining Coal of Africa, Mr Wallington held the position of CEO for the Anglo Coal Division of Anglo American plc.

Mr Wallington has also held Board positions with Firestone Energy Ltd and Keaton Energy Holdings Limited.

Open cast mining commenced in December 2009 and has a steady state of production with a maximum capacity of 60,000 ROM tonnes per month.

Hartogshoop is a 24-month contractor operation with the mining method being essentially Opencast Truck and Shovel Roll Over. The mining layout is a single boxcut of 600 metres in length.

CoAL is the technical partner to the joint venture and has an exclusive off-take agreement for all the run-of-mine coal from Zonnebloem Coal Mine, most of which feeds CoAL's wash plant at Woestalleen Colliery.

The joint venture at Zonnebloem has been a great success, with the new mine opening in record time, monthly ROM production approximately 300,000 mt and a good working relationship having developed with the joint venture partner.

Mining is currently by opencast mining, to a maximum depth of 30 metres, with low stripping ratios of about 3.0 cubic metres of overburden to 1.0 tonne of coal.
